Dartmouth College Case
A very celebrated case–Dartmouth College v Woodward (US) 4 Wheat 518, 4 L Ed 629, decided by the United States Supreme Court in 1819, announcing the doctrine that a grant of corporate powers by the sovereign to an association of individuals for public use constitutes a contract within the meaning of the Federal Constitution prohibiting state legislatures from passing laws impairing obligations of contract. 36 Am J2d Franch § 6.
