Noun: A piece of metal, made, stamped as of a certain value, and declared by law to be money; the die used in stamping money. Verb: To stamp metal and convert it to a piece of money. To coin money means to mould into form a metallic substance of intrinsic value, and stamp on it its legal value, so as to encourage and facilitate its free circulation and assure stability in the currency. Griswold v Hepburn, 63 Ky (2 Duv) 20 29. To coin money means to make money out of coin and nothing else. To coin money cannot mean to coin it out of paper. Thayer v Hedges, 22 Ind 282, 306.
