tonsure
The shaving of the hair from the crown of a man's head. Originally it was the law that no man should be admitted to the privilege of the clergy who had not the clerical habit and tonsure. See 4 Bl Comm 366. tontine company. A company or association the members of which received life rents or annuities for life and the survivors prorated the share of each deceased member among them.
