title of statute

title of statute
A heading in words given a statute for the purpose of calling attention to the subject matter of the act. The first part of a statute, often expressing the name by which it is to be known or cited and usually expressing the subject or object of the statute. Formerly, the title of a statute was of little consequence, but since the adoption of state constitutional provisions requiring the subject or object of every act to be expressed in the title, the title has become not only a necessary part of the statute, but an important one. 50 Am J1st Stat §§ 159 et seq.
