tenths

tenths
Temporary aids issuing out of personal property, and granted by parliament to the king. They were the actual tenth or fifteenth part of all of each subject's movable property. Tenths were first granted under Henry the Second to pay the expense of a Palestine crusade against the Saracen emperor, Saladine; whence this levy was called the Saladine tenth. See 1 Bl Comm 308.
