surname
A person's last name. The family name. 38 Am J1st Name § 3. The name continued from parent to child. Originally there were no surnames but the insufficiency of a given name to distinguish an individual led necessarily to the adoption of surnames. In the fourth year of Edward IV (1464), the first statute requiring the use of surnames came into existence. 38 Am J1st Name § 3.
