smokeless coal
A term of the coal business, not intended as a precise expression of a scientific concept. A trade or commercial term applied to a grade of soft coal in which the volatile matter runs from sixteen to twenty-one per cent. The volatile matter in hard coal is a much smaller percentage. Ordinarily soft coal contains from thirty-two to forty per cent volatile matter and its tendency is to produce a dense smoke.
