share of stock
A unit of interest in a corporation. The property interest of a stockholder in the corporation. 18 Am J2d Corp § 209. The tangible property of a corporation and the shares of stock therein are separate and distinct kinds of property and belong to different owners, the first being the property of the artificial person –the corporation –the latter the property of the individual owner. A share of stock merely represents, or is a fractional part of, some other property. Millar v Mountcastle, 161 Ohio St 409, 119 NE2d 626, 49 ALR2d 381. Shares of stock are to be distinguished from the certificates which merely represent ownership of the stock. State v Crawford, 159 Or 377, 80 P2d 873.
