promise of marriage

promise of marriage
An engagement of marriage to the promisee. As the words are used in the statutory offense of seduction under promise of marriage, the promise need not be expressed in any set form, or in any particular words. It is enough if language is used which implies such a promise, and is intended to convey that meaning, and is in fact so understood by the prosecutrix. State v Brinkhaus, 34 Minn 285, 286. See breach of promise.
