Nemo plus juris in alium transferre potest quam ipse habet
No one can convey a better title than he himself has. Wasserman v Metzger, 105 Va 744, 54 SE 893. This was a maxim of the civil law, and it is a principle of the English common law that a sale out of market overt did not change the property from the rightful owner. Ventress v Smith (US) 10 Pet 161, 175, 9 L Ed 382, 387.
