municipal law

municipal law
In the most narrow sense of the term, the law pertaining to municipal corporations. In a more accurate sense, the law of a municipality, a state, even the nation, as distinguished from international law. Strictly, this expression denotes the particular customs of one single municipium or free town, but it may with propriety be applied to any one state or nation, which is governed by the same laws and customs, and thus understood, it is properly defined to be a rule of civil conduct prescribed by the supreme power in a state, commanding what is right and prohibiting what is wrong. See 1 Bl Comm 44. See civil law.
