mechanical skill

mechanical skill
A term contrasted in patent law with inventive faculty. As distinguished from invention, the term imports simply the display of the expected skill of the calling; it involves the exercise of the ordinary faculties of reasoning, aided by the special knowledge and the facility of manipulation which is acquired through habitual and intelligent practice of the art; and it is in no sense the creative work of that inventive faculty which it is the purpose of the Constitution and the patent laws to encourage and reward. Callison v Dean. 70 F2d 55.
