Amistad Case

Amistad Case
A famous admiralty case involving the capture in 1839 by a United States brig of a Spanish vessel aboard which were a large number of negroes who had been kidnapped and enslaved in Africa by Spaniards in violation of the laws of Spain. The negroes mutinied near Cuba, killed the captain, and spared the lives of their captors on condition that the ship should return them to Africa forthwith. Their captors deceived them and brought the ship to New York where it was seized by United States naval authorities. In the libel suit which ensued, the negroes were held to be free and not to be pirates. United States v The Amistad (US) 15 Pet 518, 10 L Ed 826.
