guardian in chivalry
A status acquired by a lord of the manor, upon the death of a tenant holding by knight service, in reference to children of the tenant, such guardian having the right to the custody of the ward's person, and to take the profits of his land, as recompense for the loss of knight service, the guardianship terminating when the ward, if a male, reached the age of 21, or, if a female, the age of 14. 25 Am J1st G & W § 5.
