general ship
A vessel in which the master or the owners engage separately with a number of persons unconnected with each other, to convey their respective goods to the place of the vessel's destination. While a general ship is abroad, the master has power to make contracts in relation to freight which will be binding upon the owners. Ward v Green (NY) 6 Cow 173.
