Officers appointed by the English court of chancery to take the testimony of witnesses and to return the same to the court. examining court. A committing magistrate; a magistrate authorized to act, and presiding as, a magistrate inquiring into an accusation of the commission of a crime, preferred against a person by complaint, information, or affidavit, for the purpose of binding the accused over to await the action of the grand jury upon finding that there is probable cause to believe that an offense has been committed and that the accused committed it.
