estate of freehold not of inheritance
A freehold estate which does not pass to the heirs of the holder but is only for his lifetime or that of another person. Such estates are conventional, that is, expressly created by the acts of the parties; or they are legal, that is, they are created by construction and operation of law. See 2 Bl Comm 119.
