The right, recognized by courts of equity from early times, of a mortgagor, following a breach of the condition of the mortgage, to redeem property from the forfeiture by discharging the obligation secured within a reasonable period; such right is a real and beneficial estate in the land under the concept of a court of equity that despite its terms, a mortgage is a transaction of security, not of purchase. 36 Am J1st Mtg § 180.
