eavesdropper

eavesdropper
A person who listens under the windows or eaves of a house to hear the discourse therein and thereupon proclaim slanderous and mischievous tales. Such persons were regarded as nuisances at common law, and were required, in the discretion of the court, to find sureties for their good behavior. Pavesich v New England Life Ins. Co. 122 Ga 190, 50 SE 624. It is the habitual commission of the acts stated above which seems to constitute the gist of the common-law offense of eavesdropping, and the proof necessary for conviction must be such as will permit the jury to infer the habit of eavesdropping. State v Davis, 139 NC 547, 51 SE 897.
