demurrage
A sum of money due by way of compensation for the loss of earnings of a vessel by an improper delay or detention of the vessel. 48 Am J1st Ship § 606. A word derived from the maritime law but applied to railroad cars, meaning, in this respect, the charges imposed by a carrier by rail for the detention of the cars beyond the time reasonably required for the loading or unloading thereof. 13 Am J2d Car § 480.
