court of oyer and terminer
Old courts presided over by commissioners of oyer and terminer appointed by the king. among these commissioners were usually two common-law judges of the courts at Westminster. These courts were held twice each year in most of the counties of England and eight times in London and Middlesex. They had jurisdiction to hear and determine all cases of treason, felony and misdemeanor. See 4 Bl Comm 269. In the United States the higher criminal courts of some states have been given this name.
