conscience
A person's natural judgment of right and wrong. "Principle" the result of judgment, is tested by reason, defended by argument, and yields to the decision of an intelligent mind. "Conscience" springs from some internal source of self-knowledge, which acknowledges no superior, bows to no authority, yields to no demonstration, and is governed by no law; it ignores reason, defies argument, and is unaccountable and irresponsible to all human tests and standards; it is a law unto itself, and its scruples and its teachings are not amenable to human tribunals, but rest alone with its possessor and his God. An ele- ment of equitable jurisdiction, not the private opinion of an individual court, but rather to be regarded as a metaphorical term designating the common standard of civil right and expediency combined, based upon general principles and limited by established doctrines, to which the court appeals and by which it tests the conduct and rights of suitors.
