commutation of tax
An abatement of a tax; the payment of a designated sum for the privilege of exemption from taxation, or the selection in advance of a specific sum in lieu of an ad valorem tax. It has been held that either of these methods of commutation works an exemption pro tanto from taxation. Hogg v Mackay, 23 Or 339, 31 P 779. See abatement of taxes.
