As between the drawer and the payee, it is an evidence of indebtedness. Usually a check is given for money borrowed or a debt contracted, and, in commercial transactions, as well as in law, it is equivalent to the drawer's promise to pay, and an action may be brought against him thereon as on a promissory note.
