A word of such meanings and nuances in the law of England, especially the earlier law, that accurate and comprehensive definition is impossible. Noun: A court; a statute; a tax; the verdict of a jury in a court of assize; a writ; a jury summoned by a writ of assize; an action to recover land of which plaintiff's ancestor had been disseised. Verb: To fix; to regulate.
