pro rata freight charge
A charge for delivery of shipment short of destination. Pro rata freight is sometimes allowed a carrier when transportation has been interrupted or delayed by stress of weather or other cause. In such case, if the freighter or his consignee is willing to dispense with the performance of the whole voyage, and voluntarily accept the goods before the end of the voyage, a proportionate amount of freight will be due as freight "pro rata itineris." 13 Am J2d Car § 465; 48 Am J1st Ship § 432. See proportional rate.
