on the front

on the front
At the front. As used in a statute requiring automobiles during certain hours to display at least two lighted lamps "on the front," the phrase does not necessarily mean the very foremost part of the vehicle, but means such a point in front of the driver as will make the light visible in the direction in which the car is proceeding.
