No Popery Riots

No Popery Riots
Riots of unprecedented magnitude which occurred in London in June, 1780. A mob of sixty thousand persons had control of the city for several days. The authorities were paralyzed. The cause of it was Lord George Gordon's petition to parliament for the repeal of Sir George Saville's act for the relief of Catholics. The riot spread throughout the kingdom. London was in a state of anarchy. On June sixth, thirty-six fires set by the mob were raging. The Fleet and King's Bench prisons were fired, and the prisoners released. All public buildings were threatened; many private homes were sacked and burned. More than four hundred and fifty persons were killed. The military finally subdued the mob. The courts held the respective hundreds liable for the losses in them. County of Allegheny v Gibson, 90 Pa 397.
