Extracting coal or ore from the earth. The actual cutting or hewing of the mineral in a mine and its removal to the surface. Anno: 11 ALR 154. Including the ordinary treatment and processes normally applied by mine owners to obtain the commercially marketable mineral product. A term sometimes deemed inclusive of the taking of clay, ironstone, and limestone from quarries, even the taking of such substances and coal from quarries or open pits. 36 Am J2d Min & M § 2. By statute enacted in Indiana in the year 1889, it was declared that the word should be deemed to include the sinking of gas wells. See State of Indiana ex rel.
