A lien on a vessel, enforceable by suit in rem, in favor of any person furnishing repairs, supplies, towage, use of drydock or marine railway or other necessaries, to any vessel, foreign or domestic. 46 USC § 971. To be distinguished from a common-law lien on a vessel which depends upon possession. 48 Am J1st Ship § 551. A lien on a. vessel by contract, even by tort. 48 Am J1st Ship §§ 553 et seq.
