initial carrier

initial carrier
The first carrier in a pair or series of connecting carriers, the carrier who received the goods from the shipper. 14 Am J2d Car § 700. It has also been held that the term refers to the carrier contracting with the shipper, and is not necessarily the one whose line constitutes the first link in transportation. Knapp v Minneapolis, St. P & S. S. M. Ry. Co. 33 ND 291, 156 NW 1019.
