hear and see

hear and see
Literally, the exercise of the senses of sight and hearing. A metaphor in expressing apprehension or conscious knowledge. A person may hear or see and yet not observe; that is, he may not have a conscious knowledge of the object or noise he actually sees or hears, and, ordinarily, when questioned as to the fact, he will say that he did not see or hear.
