general reputation

general reputation
The evidence to which proof of the good or bad character of a party to a civil action or the defendant in a criminal prosecution is confined. 29 Am J2d Ev §§ 339, 344-346. The determining factor in measuring the worth and weight of evidence of a man's good character is whether the community in which he has lived his life is sufficiently large for the persons to become acquainted with his character and to form a general opinion of it. This we call general reputation. People v Colantone, 243 NY 134, 139, 152 NE 700.
