ferryman

ferryman
A person operating a ferry. In the understanding of the common law, a ferryman was a person who had the exclusive right of transporting passengers over rivers and other watercourses, for hire, at an established rate; and no other person could keep or employ a boat to his prejudice, either at the same place, or within a limited distance above or below him; and he was bound at all times to be ready with good boats and craft to convey passengers backwards and forwards, otherwise an action would lie against him. Clarke v State, 7 SC Eq 2 M'Cord 47.
