Citizenship of a state as distinguished from citizenship of the United States. Dred Scott v Sanford (US) 19 How 393, 15 L Ed 691. This case was decided in 1857. The Fourteenth Amendment declaring citizens of the United States to be "citizens of the State wherein they reside," was adopted in 1868.
