In the broad sense, a deduction from a sum in gross; a reduction from a regular price of an article offered for sale. In a technical sense, interest reserved from the amount lent at the time of making the loan. 30 Am J Rev ed Int § 12. In the banking business a charge for a loan in advance, whether called interest, compensation, or premium, the amount of the discount being deducted from the principal and retained by the bank at the time of making the loan. 10 Am J2d Banks § 689. A rate applied in the commutation of periodical payments to a payment in a lump sum. Anno: 105 ALR 242.
