In the pristine sense, the ownership of the means of production by the community, each member of the community participating in production according to his ability and sharing in the products according to his need; in common usage of the present day, suggestive of the theories of Marx and Lenin and the politics and authoritarian rule of Stalin and his successors in Russia and the leaders in China since the People's Republic was proclaimed in 1949.
