A modern movement in the interest of economy, more efficient administration, and improvement in education, whereby all the schools of an entire area, such as a township, a part of a county, two or more townships, or part of one township and part of another township, sometimes part of one county and part of another county, are brought together into one centralized district, in which one or more, usually several, public schools shall be maintained, the most common system being to have one high school and a number of separate schools, each of which is equipped for the education of one or two grades, from kindergarten or first grade through the eighth grade, transportation of pupils in busses being provided all pupils.
