thread of stream

thread of stream
The mean center line of the main channel of a stream or river. Buttenuth v St. Louis Bridge Co. 123 Ill 535, 17 NE 439. The middle line between the shores, irrespective of the depth of the channel, taking it in the natural and ordinary stage of the water, at its medium height, neither swollen by freshet nor diminished by drought. 12 Am J2d Bound § 28. Noting, however, that according to some authority, the thread of a non-navigable river is to be ascertained from the measurement of the water at its lowest stage. Hardt v Orr, 142 Neb 460, 6 NW2d 589.
