substituted service
Service of process by leaving a copy of the summons or writ with a suitable person at the residence, dwelling house, or place of abode of the party to be served. 42 Am J1st Proc § 60. In some jurisdictions, the equivalent of actual or personal service. Grant v Lawrence, 37 Utah 540, 108 P 931. A term applied in some jurisdictions to service by mail or service by publication.
