The word "see" and the word "hear," when used in a negative statement, are often used to express the negation of apprehension or conscious knowledge. A person may hear or see and yet not observe that is, he may not have a conscious knowledge of the object or noise he actually sees or hears, and, ordinarily, when questioned as to the fact, he will say that he did not see or hear.
