niece

niece
The daughter of one's brother or sister. A relative in the third degree according to the civil-law method of computing degrees of kinship which prevails in most American jurisdictions. 23 Am J2d Desc & D § 48. As the term is used in statutes relating to incest and prohibiting marriage between uncle and niece, it is confined to relationship by consanguinity and does not refer to relations by affinity. State v Tucker, 174 Ind 715, 93 NE 3. See nephews and nieces.
