The subject of the litigation; the matter for which suit is brought and upon which the trial of the action proceeds. Lee v Watson (US) 1 Wall 337, 17 L Ed 557. The claim presented on the record of a case in court to the legal consideration of the court, ordinarily the amount demanded by the plaintiff's pleading. St. Paul Mercury Indem. Co. v Red Cab Co. 303 US 283, 82 L Ed 845, 58 S Ct 586 (relative to removal of case to federal court from a state court). See amount in controversy; matter in issue.
