maritime law

maritime law
The law which deals with rights, duties, and liabilities with respect to, or arising out of, the use of navigable waters for the transportation of persons or property by means of ships or vessels, either commercially or non-commercially. 48 Am J1st Ship § 3. The United States has its own system of maritime law, coextensive with and operating uniformly throughout its boundaries. The basis of this system is the general maritime law but the latter has no inherent force of its own and is operative in this, as in any country, only so far as it has been adopted by the laws and usages thereof. 48 Am J1st Ship § 3. See admiralty.
