judicium ferri: The judgment of the iron. This judgment was the culmination of a trial by fire-ordeal, which was performed either by taking up in the hand a piece of red-hot iron of from one to three pounds weight, or else by walking barefoot and blindfold over nine red-hot ploughshares, laid lengthwise at equal distances. If the accused escaped unhurt, he was acquitted, but if otherwise, as was usually the case, he was adjudged guilty. See 4 Bl Comm 342.
