general retainer
The engaging of the professional services of an attorney at law by a client for a specified period of time, often a year, such services to be rendered only upon the request of the client, but the attorney being bound not to accept any retainer in opposition to the client for the period and accordingly entitled to be paid for the retainer in any event.
