A tax upon the transmission of property by a deceased person, that is, upon the privilege of transmitting property. 28 Am J Rev ed Inher T § 5. A tax imposed upon the net or taxable estate of a decedent without reference to the relationship of the recipients to the decedent or to the amount which a recipient takes. 28 Am J Rev ed Inher T § 5. A tax upon the transfer of property at death by a decedent, as distinguished from a succession tax, which, in its essence, is a tax upon the right to receive property from the estate of a decedent.
